We most often focus our conversation on the death and resurrection of Christ. But let’s not forget that between the death and resurrection is His burial. According to each of the gospel writers and Paul's gospel confession in 1 Corinthians 15, that is no insignificant matter. Yet we know little about His burial, and perhaps think even less of its significance. Christ's burial assures us of the good news in His death. That's why the gospel writers include it in the story of Christ. How do they portray Christ's burial as good news?

God has opened the way into His presence! So effectively is the way opened that God tells us to come boldly before Him in Hebrews 4:16 - as long as we come the way of Christ. Christ declared that He alone is the way to the Father. Through Him we find welcome into the presence of the Creator. The last gasp of Jesus on the cross opens the way to God forever. That's the testimony of the Gospel writers, and the agreement of the other biblical writers. The meaning of Christ’s death revolves around the way to God being opened.

Our study today is about the ultimate abandonment. It’s the abandonment of the Son of God. When Jesus hung on the cross, He was utterly abandoned – not just by His enemies but by His own Father God. That folks, is the ultimate abandonment. Jesus knows what it’s like to be feel and be abandoned. It was the most painful thing He had to endure as a human being. And yet because of His abandonment, we don’t ever have to feel abandoned again.

Jesus endured the mockery of men in His own time. And though we like to think of our era as more enlightened than the era Jesus walked the planet, the scorn of men toward Christ and the gospel has not changed. The great irony is that the One mocked is the only hope for sinful men. Even mockers have hope in Christ. How can that be the case?
