In this passage Jesus confronts the insincere traditions of the Jewish religious leaders of His day. Religious traditions can be great reminders of the things that are important in life. When those traditions are based on the Word of God and practiced from a sincere and devoted heart they can be very valuable. But when they are practiced on the outside without any godly devotion on the inside they can begin to become dangerous. And when they are practiced as a show to others and God with the expectation that practicing the tradition makes God our debtor, then the tradition has turned from good to evil.

Fear is a normal part of life, but the various fears we face should diminish or even disappear when ignorance is replaced with understanding or when trust can be placed in someone or something you believe can handle the situation. Fear is replaced by peace when you keep focused on Jesus.

The compassion of Christ comes in many forms – sometimes in forms we don’t expect. In our story today, we see it in at least three forms. First we see it in the form of Jesus teaching the crowd that had gathered because they obviously were going about life wrong and needed to learn how to start doing it right. Then we see Christs compassion in the meeting of immediate physical needs. And then He shows His compassion for His disciples by testing them, so they might learn that Jesus is really able to meet every need.
